Abstract

In this research, Z. acidojujuba Cheng et Liu and Ziziphus spina-christi were used to compare the differences in morphology and anatomical structure of the root system using paraffin sections and other methods. The results showed that the root length, surface area and volume are greater and the number of root tips was higher in the Ziziphus spina-christi compared to the drought tolerant Z. acidojujuba Cheng et Liu, indicating a well-developed root system in the Ziziphus spina-christi. In addition, the thickness of the cortex, the number and diameter of xylem ducts of Ziziphus spina-christi were greater than those of Z. acidojujuba Cheng et Liu. The developed vascular tissues and the greater capacity for transport are more conducive to the adaptation of Ziziphus spina-christi to drought conditions. At the same time, the comparison revealed that the anatomical features of the two were similar, from the outside to the inside: epidermis, cortex, bast, formative layer, xylem and pith, which provides a theoretical basis for the grafting of date palms and the selection of good rootstocks. The next step is to further investigate the growth and developmental characteristics and physiological properties of the root systems of Z. acidojujuba Cheng et Liu and Ziziphus spina-christi. And a comprehensive evaluation of stress resistance will provide the basis for research and production.
