EVALUATION OF STRESS SELECTION INDICES FOR MORPHOLOGICAL TRAITS IN BREAD WHEAT

Babar
Abstract

The research was carried out under irrigated conditions during 2017-18 to estimate stress selection indices for morphological studies in wheat. Twenty wheat genotypes along with 2 checks (Pakhtunkhwa-2015 and Pirsabak-13) were planted at CCRI under two sowing dates Normal plantation on 24th November and short plantation on 25th December 2017 in randomized complete block design with three replications. Under stress and non-stress conditions, nine stress tolerance indices were calculated for each trait and genotype: tolerance index (TOL), mean productivity (MP), harmonic mean (HM), stress susceptibility index (SSI), stress intensity (SI), geometric mean productivity (GMP), stress tolerance index (STI), yield index (YI), and yield stability index (YSI). For the bulk of the variables, analysis of variance indicated extremely significant variations across genotypes. Based on stress selection indices and mean performance in this experiment, PS-23, PS-33, PS-34, and PS-28 genotypes showed the best performance, and genotype Inq-91/FS (f8) was found to be the most stable in performance and tolerance in stress conditions as compared to all others genotypes under stress selection indices and these genotypes might be applied in wheat breeding programs in the future to enhance grain yield stability in bread wheat.
