EVALUATION OF F1 HYBRIDS FOR YIELD AND YIELD RELATED TRAITS IN PEA (Pisum sativum)

Faiza Aman
Abstract

Research was performed to assess genetic variation and magnitude of heterosis in pea. Fifty six F1 hybrids of pea along with their eight parents were derived from 8×8 full diallel mating design during two pea growing seasons (2017-18 and 2018-2019). Significant (P ≤ 0.01) differences among the parents and their respective 56 F1 hybrids were manifested for all the studied traits. Among parental genotypes, Green Gold and UAP-35 manifested maximum number of seeds pod-1 and hundred green seeds weight, respectively while the highest green pod yield was revealed by UAP-47. Among F1 hybrids, F1 hybrids Green Gold × UAP-47 and UAP-29 × UAP-47 displayed maximum pod length and pods plant-1, respectively. For pods plant-1, the highest values of mid-parent and better-parent heterosis were manifested by F1 cross UAP-7 × UAP-35. F1 hybrid Leena Pak × UAP-31 displayed the highest magnitude of mid-parent and better-parent heterosis (63.2 %) for seeds pod-1. The highest mid-parent and better-parent heterosis for 100-green seed weight was exhibited by cross UAP-32 × UAP-7. F1 cross combination UAP 47 × UAP-29 displayed maximum better-parent heterosis for green pod yield. The segregating generations of above mentioned hybrids are recommended to be advanced further to develop high yielding pea cultivars.
