AGRICULTURAL SUSTAINABILITY: A PERSPECTIVE ABOUT CHICKPEA FARMING AND THE CASE OF LEGUMES IN TURKEY

Abstract


Agriculture and expanding of industrial utilization are not rivals unlike they are complements. Sustainability of healthy food production and food security are the most important concepts to achieve sustainability of agriculture. Edible legumes (pulses) are protein source for more than two billion people, an important diet product, have symbiotic nitrogen fixation mechanism and protect to soil and water resources that are main components of sustainability. Basic requirements of human especially food supply presenting serious changes and providing of needs is growing day by day. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is a legume species that is an important food source due to be a good source of diet fiber, healthy nutrition, health care statues such as diabetes, hemorrhoid, coroner system, cancer types etc. problems, rich by minerals (phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium), beta carotene similar carotenoids, vitamins (rich by A, B, C and normal by D), the highest biological score value (65) amongst the legumes compared by egg score (100), an important source of histidine amino acid that is essential for baby nutrition, various industrial utilization and complementary to cereals. Chickpea is the most produced legumes in Turkey. UÅŸak City is one of the most producer in the country. According to data of last 25 years, producing of chickpea is decreasing in Turkey. In this study, a survey is realized by chickpea growers of Ulubey Town / UÅŸak City to evaluation of the chickpea farming and to consider about how to increase chickpea production that is substantial for sustainability of functional food production and sustainability of agriculture in consequence of superior nutritional properties, conserving of natural resources, eco-friend production systems, decrease of fallow lands in some regions, suggestion for rotation and/or winter crop. Additionally, present statues, case of sector, future expectations, facilities, strong and weak sides, aim, offer, scheme in Turkey are discussed.
