Shireen Sadruddin
Abstract

The current study has been designed to evaluate the phytochemical, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect of A.fistulosum. Fifty mice were divided into 5 groups randomly to determine the analgesic activity by using tail flick method. Normal saline 5 ml/kg were given to group 1 orally whereas A.fistulosum were administered orally to groups 2, 3 and 4 at a dose of 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg respectively. Aspirin 300 mg/kg were given orally as a standard drug to group 5 animals. Anti-inflammatory effect was carried out on 50 rats. 1% carrageenan was used to induce edema in paw. Group 1 act as a control group whereas the other three groups received A. fistulosum at a dose of 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg. Fifth group were given the standard drug Ibuprofen. Phytochemical evaluation was carried out to reveal the constituents present in ethanol extract of A.fistulosum. The screening shows the presence of pharmacological active components such as carbohydrates, flavonoid, amino acid, glycosides, phenols and tannins. The increase in latency period has been seen in all three groups of animals receiving A.fistulosum which shows analgesic effect. Paw thickness was also found to be significantly reduced in animals treated with ethanol extract at all three doses. In conclusion, this study shows the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Ethanolic extract of A.fistulosm, which was predominantly attributable the presence of phytochemical compounds like flavonoids. KEYWORD: Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, flavonoid
