Determination of Plant Nutrients and Essential Oils in Organic and Traditional Thyme Cultivation

Ethem GÖRECE
Abstract

This study was conducted in Denizli Province, Çal District, Kabalar neighborhood. In the study, the amounts of macro- and micro-elements in the leaf samples of Izmir thyme (Origanumonites L.) cultivated under traditional and organic conditions in the experimental fields were determined. The leaf samples were collected during the flowering period (June-July 2016). At the same time, soil samples representing the lands were collected at depths up to 30 cm and analyzed, and the amount of essential oil contained in the plant samples was determined. According to soil analysis, the soil reaction (pH) of traditionally cultivated gardens was found to be slightly lower than was that of organically cultivated gardens. The amount of lime (CaCO3%) in all the gardens ranged from medium to excessive levels, and the amounts of organic matter were low or very low. Since the level of salinity was below 0.15%, soils were considered to have no salinity. It was observed that the soils generally had a loamy texture. It was determined that organic and traditional gardens were mostly low in phosphorus and potassium. According to leaf analysis, it was determined that nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements of the soils were either in deficient or in inadequate amounts in almost all of the gardens cultivated either organically or traditionally, and that the amount of Calcium element ranged from inadequate to high levels in traditionally cultivated gardens, and was adequate in most of the organically cultivated gardens. The results of the analysis for micro elements indicated that the amounts of microelements were adequate or high in all the gardens. In similar studies conducted on Izmir thyme or other types of thyme, the amounts of essential oil were determined to be close to those determined in our study.
