Samy Selim
Abstract

This research work deals with the evaluation of in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the Pistacia lentiscus bark and the determination of its phytochemical content. The bark extract of P. lentiscus showed a significant antimicrobial effect, it strongly inhibited the growth of the test bacteria and yeast studied. The exposure times of extract for the complete inhibition of cell viability of P. aeruginosa were found to be 5% at 15 min. The IC50 values were compared with the IC50 values of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and ascorbic acid. Phytochemical analysis of the methanol extract proves the presence of carbohydrates, tannins, flavonoids, coumarins, alkaloids and triterpenes, and deep phytochemical analysis led to the identification of methyl gallate, gallic acid, kaempferol, quercetin, kaempferol 3-O-α-rhamnoside, kaempferol 3-O-β-glucoside, and Quercetin-3-O-β-glucoside. The results indicated that Pistacia lentiscus bark methanol extract is a good candidate for antimicrobial activity against the strains evaluated in this study.
