Abstract

Orchidaceae is the biggest plant family with 6-800 genera and 25-35,000 species. Orchid beauty mesmerizes to human being and create a billion-dollar market worldwide. The aim of this study was to establish the cost-effective growth method for large scale production of commercially important orchid plants. The growth and development of orchids was established through micropropagation and acclimatized for healthy growth in hydroponic system. Under this study the shooting of orchids was obtained on reported media and rooting of orchids was attained on optimized medium. Different concentrations of NAA (napthaleneacetic acid) from 0mg/l to 0.8mg/l were used in media for the development of orchid roots. Among different concentrations of NAA orchid showed the highest number of 12 roots at 0.6mg/l whereas highest length of roots (1.8cm) were observed at 0.8mg/l. In the present study hydroponics system was established for the growth of an orchid, three different types of nutrient solutions were tested. This study indicates that among various nutrient solutions, NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium) was best nutrient solution for the effective growth and development of commercially important orchids. Therefore, this protocol found to be most effective for the micropropagation of commercially important orchids.
