Abstract

The loamy soil culture experiment was assessed to examine the effects of exogenously applied ascorbic acid which is considered a water soluble antioxidant and osmoprotectant, in pea (Pisum Sativum L.) under control and drought conditions. Three pea cultivars (Meteor, Sarsabz and Pea 2009) were sowed in loamy soil under controlled conditions and varying concentrations (0 mM, 0.5 mM and 1 mM) of ascorbic acid were sprayed. Under water stress, foliar spray of ascorbic acid enhanced the physiological properties significantly e.g. fresh/dryshoot weight/length, fresh/dry root weight. Chlorophyll showed increased values after AsA application under drought. The lipid peroxidation was decreased as ROS damage lessened by exogenous ascorbic acid under drought. The biochemical activities (CAT, SOD and POD) also enhanced after foliar spray of ascorbic acid under water stress. Foliar spray of ascorbic acid (0.5 mM and 1.0 mM) reduced the plant growth, biochemical activities under normal conditions.Foliar spray of ascorbic acid (0.5 mM and 1.0 mM) reduced the plant growth, biochemical activities under normal conditions.
