Abstract

Drought is one of the most crucial abiotic stresses. It affects badly plant growth and development. Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is a drought tolerant oil seed crop, but it is sensitive to drought at germination and seedling stages. Due to the climate change severe droughts are expected in future. Keeping this situation in mind, present research was planned for selection of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) accessions under normal and drought stress conditions. Response of the sixty sesame accessions to drought stress at germination and seedling stage was examined by using polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000) as drought simulator under laboratory. Normal and drought stress treatments i.e. T0= zero (control), T1= -4 and T2= -6 bar were developed by dissolving 0, 188 g and 238 g Polyethylene Glycol (PEG-6000) in 1000 mL distilled water and a completely randomized design with three replications were used. Fresh root length index, Fresh shoot length index ,Fresh root weight index, Fresh shoot weight index , Dry root weight index and Dry shoot weight indexes were determined to evaluate the response of sesame accessions under normal and PEG simulated drought stress treatments. Principal component analysis was used to select the drought tolerant and sensitive accessions. The accessions (TH-6), (TS-5), (95001), (96006), (TS-3), (90005), (97007), (95010), (95013) and (93003) were drought tolerant and had maximum mean values for most of the traits. Accessions (97005), (96019-2), (97001), (96014), (93004) and (96019) were drought sensitive. These accessions may be used for the development of drought stress tolerant sesame types. This study may be helpful for the comparison of drought indexes in a controlled experimental assay and for the identification of drought tolerant sesame cultivars to be used in further breeding programs.
