Abstract

Iranian mangrove forests are very important in the sense that they are the last collection of these trees for coastal areas in Southwest Asia. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of some ecological parameters on the distribution of diversity of mangrove forest from a morphological and anatomical point of view across four remote populations from four southern provinces of Iran. For this purpose, after a field visit to four regions of mangrove forests (Govater, Qeshm, Assaluyeh and Mahshahr) and sampling of ecological factors of air, soil, and water, the morphological features and anatomical traits were measured. The results revealed significant differences in the four regions in terms of ecological parameters, including soil texture, lime exchange rate, electrical conductivity (EC), pH as well as sodium and potassium content of the water. There were also significant differences between the four habitats in terms of morphological characteristics such as tree height, dimeter-at-breast height (DBH), collar diameter, leaf dimensions, pneumatophore length and diameter, with the exception of petiole length. There were no significant differences between the four regions in terms of anatomical characteristics such as pore length and width, upper epidermis thickness, density and dimensions of salt glands, with the exception of the thickness of the upper and lower cuticle, as well as lower epidermis. Pearson correlation coefficient was also determined between ecology, morphology and anatomy variables. In general, most of the morphological and anatomical characteristics of mangrove species are different from east to west of Iran due to the obtained ecological changes.
