PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF SALVADORA OLEOIDES AGAINST TRIBOLIUM CASTANEUM HERBST IN CHOLISTAN DESERT BAHAWALPUR

Afza Abbasi
Abstract

Salvadora oleoides Decne is a valuable medicinal tree, which belongs to the family Salvadoraceae. It is commonly known in Cholistan desert of Pakistan as Pilo, Jhal and Mithi Wan. The antimicrobial and anti-pest activity of its plant parts were not reported in the area. Therefore, the current study was conducted in Maluk Shah Graveyard close to Bahawalpur Cantonment during the month of May, 2020 in which the antimicrobial activity and effects of Salvadora oleoides’ extracts against Tribolium castaneum Herbst were seen. The methanol extracts of various plant parts (branches, leaves and bark) were examined for antimicrobial analysis through the agar disc diffusion methodology. Extracts that are obtained by Soxhlet extraction method were evaluated and studied for their antimicrobial abilities against five bacterial strains. The bark of the tree showed highest antibacterial activity while the twigs showed moderate and leaves showed least antibacterial activity. Tribolium castaneum which were known for damaging pulses and wheat flour in storage were treated with methanol extracts of various parts in plants of S. oleoides by filter paper impregnation method. Extract of leaves were founded to be most reactive against Tribolium castaneum. The results of the research suggested that Salvadora oleoides acquires great antimicrobial and anti-pest properties as it has many essential phytochemicals and minerals. Phytochemical screening with many qualitative tests presented the occurrence of protein, carbohydrates, tannins, flavonoids and saponins, terpenoids and glycosides. Standard test method (STM) micronutrients and heavy metals revealed the presence of essential micronutrients Zn, Cu, Fe and Mn in Salvadora oleoides plant parts.
