Abstract

In current research green chemistry approach was used for the synthesis of silver and zinc oxide nanoparticles using Bryophyllum pinnatum plant extract. Thes synthesized particles were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, SEM, EDS, XRD and FTIR. Moreover, biosynthesized particles were subjected to evaluate their bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive (Micrococcus luteus, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative bacterial strains (Agrobacterium tumifaciens, Salmonella Setubal, Enterobacter aerogenes), showing the highest activity against Gram-negative bacterial strains in the case of AgNPs while ZnO nanoparticles showed the highest activity against Gram-positive bacterial strains. Also, the biosynthesized nanoparticles exhibited moderate dose-dependent antifungal activity against tested fungal strains. Cytotoxicity of nanoparticles was found significant using brine shrimp lethality assay with lesser IC50 values i.e 4.09 ppm for AgNPs and 13.72 ppm for ZnONPs and 24.83 ppm for plant extract. Finally, the combination of metal nanoparticles along with plant extract may enhance the therapeutic potential and overcome various ailments. This is the first study reporting the comparison of silver and ZnO nanoparticles of Bryophyllum pinnatum plant extract for antibacterial and cytotoxicity study.
