Abstract

Abstract Soil and leaf indexing was carried out to understand the nutritional status and to ascertain the relationship between nutrients, fruit yield, and yield attributes of ‘Dehradun’ litchi growing under the N-W regions of India. Thirty nine orchards were randomly selected for leaf, soil analysis and fruit parameters of litchi growing pockets (Hoshiarpur (S-I), Gurdaspur (S-II), and Pathankot (S-III) of Punjab. Correlation coefficients were worked to analyze their contributions to fruit production of the crop. It was found that leaf Ca was low in 28.1 % of orchards, followed by N (26.4%) and Mn (23.2 %). Leaf nutrients namely Zn, Fe, Mg, and K were high in 58.0, 57.6, 35.8, and 31.2 % of orchards, respectively. The soil-leaf nutrient relationship showed strong positive correlations for K, Ca, and Mg concentrations but P and Cu contents showed positive but non-significant relationships. The leaf nitrogen and potassium contents were primarily associated with the improvement in fruit yield and had shown statistically significant positive correlations whereas optimum concentrations of leaf Zn, Fe, and Cu were also contributed for an increment in fruit weight. It is concluded that the optimum soil and leaf nutrient concentrations maintained through the planned fertilizer programme noticeably influence morphogenetic and yield attributes in litchi. The present studies revealed that relationships between plant and soil nutrition status significantly affect the fruit yield and quality. The leaf nutrients concentrations were significantly correlated to soil nutrition status. This emphasizes the significance of fertilizer management in improving fruit yield and quality. The soil-leaf nutrition indexing and fruit analysis could be helpful for the farmers to rectifying the nutritional deficiency of litchi orchards for healthy fruit production. Keywords: Litchi, nutritional survey, correlations, yields levels.
