EVALUATION OF HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT BY USE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS OF AJK-PAKISTAN, A NOVEL STUDY

FARIA NISAR
Abstract

In this study, we selected frequently used therapeutic plants from mountainous areas of district Neelum AJ&K. Most of the population of AJ&K live in rural and /or areas, about 60% people live in mountainous/rural areas located far flung from the district headquarters thereby having less health and transportation facilities. Therefore, they depend largely on local medicinal plants to cure ailments and heal up the cuts and burns. The antioxidant and phytochemical activities and metal contents from different parts of frequently used therapeutic plants were studied. Distilled water, ethanol and acetone solvents were used to extract the antioxidants and phytochemical constituents. Among the investigated plants of district Neelum, the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents (70.31 mg/g, 81.03 mg/g) were displayed by leaves of Angelica cyclocarpa and least contents were shown by leaves extracts of Geranium wallichianum. Leaves of Angelica cyclocarpa exhibited significant hydrogen peroxide and OH radical scavenging activities (85%, 78%). Among the metals, the highest concentration of Ca was present in the leaves of Geranium wallichianum followed by the highest concentration of Fe (5.477 mg/kg) in Angelica cyclocarpa. The HRI study revealed that leaves of Geranium wallichianum was not safe for treatment of diseases and for human consumption.
