Abstract

This study was conducted to identify the heat tolerant wheat genotypes and to assess their response for yield and related traits under heat stress conditions managed through varying planting dates in field. Ten genotypes (6 advance lines, 3 commercial and 1 check varieties) were evaluated in non-stressed (normal sowing; 16th November, 2017) and stressed (late; 19th December, 2017 and very late sowing; 9th January, 2018) environments. The experiments were conducted during the cropping season of 2017-18. Yield and yield contributing traits varied among the genotypes under both normal and heat stressed conditions. Based on mean performance over the average under all environments, new advance lines (DANI-13, DANI-16 and SD-9899) along with commercial varieties (NIA-Sunhari, NIA-Sundar and Khirman) showed better performance for different traits including grain yield plot-1. These genotypes are valuable genetic resource, hence can be used in future wheat breeding programs, especially improvement against heat stress. Over the pooled data, significant and positive association was shown by grain yield plot-1 with all characters, such as plant height, peduncle length, spikelets spike-1, spike length, grains spike-1, 1000-grain weight, biological yield plot-1 and harvest index suggesting that these yield related traits can be exploited in wheat breeding to evolve high yielding and heat stress tolerant wheat genotypes.
