BIOREMEDIATION OF LEAD (pb) BY USING SUNFLOWER PLANT GENES INSERTION IN E. coli

Wajeeha Hamid
Abstract

Lead is a heavy metal that contaminate environment naturally but most of its concentrations that are found in environment are the result of human activities. The lead particles pollute soil, surface, water and atmosphere and cause health issues for the living organisms. Several methods already used to clean these contaminants from the environment, but most of them are costly and difficult to handle. The technology is used which is environmental friendly and affordable called phytoremediation. Sunflower is one of the most recommended plants for the phytoremediation of heavy metals. The phytoremediation is a slow process so we move toward the genetic engineering. In order to investigate the genes responsible for the phytoremediation, only the mature tissues taken from leaves and flower could be used for the DNA extraction. The most suitable and reliable method used for the DNA extraction is CTAB (cetyl trimethylammonium bromide) for cell lysis, after the collection of cells from grinded sample, remove all the other proteins and other cellular debris which are not required and purify the DNA. Purify the gene that is responsible for the phytoremediation. The gene is then extracted and transfer to the suspected microorganism like E. coli through transformation technique. The E. coli is a rapidly growing model organism, through this genetic engineering it become able to bio remediate the lead from the soil with good growth ability. It is suggested that this technique will reduce the problem caused by lead and also become beneficial for the environment and the living organisms.
