SELECTION OF HIGH YIELDING GENETICALLY SUPERIOR COMMON BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) GENOTYPES BASED ON SSR MARKERS

Atta Ullah
Abstract

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is also known as French bean which grown worldwide for its edible purpose. The present study was designed to select high yielding genetically superior common bean genotypes based on SSR markers. In this regard, five lines of Phaseolus vulgaris were selected from a broad based exotic as well as local genetic resources along with two checks and were evaluated in three different locations of Malakand division (Swat, Dir lower and Dir upper), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan for morphological characterization, yield traits, genetic response and proteins contents. The candidate lines NS-1 and NS2 performed significantly in term of yield and disease incidence at Swat region, hence recommended for the general cultivation in Swat area. The selected lines “NS-2 and 4” recorded higher for yield at Dir Lower, while NS1-4 lines showed higher yield at Dir Upper. NS1 and NS2 being highly stable and high yielding lines, were adapted widely. All these seven lines were investigated for Microsatellite that indicated narrow gene diversity (0.78-0.86), it was largely attributed to selection pressure from the wide ranged genetic resources. On the basis of current findings, NS-1 and NS-2 are recommended for the farmers of Malakand division, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
