PRODUCTIVE INCREASEMENT OF MAIZE SINK POTENTIAL THROUGH DETASSELING AND NITROGEN MANAGEMENT

Atta ur Rahman
Abstract

Detasseling and nitrogen management effects maize yield because of its closed association with sink potential. Thus an experiment was designed to evaluate productive increasement in maize sink potential under detasseling and nitrogen management at University research farm, The University of Agriculture Peshawar, Pakistan during kharif season 2019. A randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement having four replications was used. Detasseling was comprised of three levels i.e. no-detasseling, detasseling and detachment of lower three leaves were randomly allocated to main plots while, nitrogen application consisted of five levels 0, 100, 120, 140 and 160 kg N ha-1 and were assigned to the sub plots at random. Results revealed that detasseling have significantly reduced seed fill interval (36 days), caused earlier physiological and harvest maturity that took (105 and 109 days), maximum 1000-grain weight (231 g), grain yield (3231 kg ha-1) and HI (32.7 %) were obtained. Nitrogen at 160 kg ha-1 significantly took more days to tasseling and silking (65 and 73 days). At 160 kg nitrogen ha-1 maximized productivity of plants (7.5 eared plants m-2 ), number of ears (8 m-2), seed fill duration (38 days), no. of grains and grain rows (395 and 16 ) per ear, 1000-grain weight (248.8 g), grain yield (3964 kg ha-1), biological yield (11472 kg ha-1) and HI (34.7 %). Combined application of detasseling and nitrogen significantly affected seed fill duration, days to physiological and harvest maturity. Detasseling (at complete pollen shed stage) along with nitrogen application at 160 kg ha-1 increased yield by 54% over control and other yield attributes. Maize sink strength was increased that lead towards yield essentials and seed weight hence recommended.
