WHEAT RESPONSE TO INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF PHOSPHORUS AND ITS APPLICATION TIMING

Mohsin Khan
Abstract

Organic manures applied at proper timing with inorganic fertilizer improve the soil productivity and fertility. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the wheat response to integrated management of phosphorus and its application timing at Agronomy Research Farm, The University of Agriculture during winter 2019-2020. The design for the experiment was randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement having four replications. Main plots were used for fertilization timing (01, 15 and 30 days before sowing) and sub-plots for phosphorus (P) sources (control, 100%FYM, 100%PM, 100%SSP, 50%FYM+50%PM, 50%FYM+50%SSP and 50%PM+50%SSP). Results showed that maximum height (93.2 cm), leaf area tiller-1 (113.2 cm2), spikes m-2 (256), grains spike-1 (47), thousand grains weight (40.7 g), grain yield (3489 kg ha-1) and biological yield (8796 kg ha-1) were observed for the fertilization timing 30 days before sowing. In case of phosphorus sources maximum leaf area tiller-1 (117.7 cm2) spikes m-2 (262), grains spike-1 (48), thousand grains weight (41.8 g) grain yield (3669 kg ha-1) and harvest index (41.6%) were recorded for plots fertilized with phosphorus 90 kg ha-1 50% each from poultry manure and single super phosphate. Taller plants (95.9 cm) and higher biological yield (8850 kg ha-1) were observed when phosphorus was applied 50% from farmyard manure and 50% from SSP while the lower pH (7.6) and high electrical conductivity (EC) 0.191 dSm-1 were recorded for plots treated with organic manures only. From this experiment, it was concluded that application of organic manures 30 days before sowing with inorganic fertilizers i.e. combination of 50% SSP and 50% either PM or FYM are recommended for higher yield and yield components of wheat.
