PHARMACOLOGICAL, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND ETHNOMEDICINAL ASPECTS OF SONCHUS ASPER (L.) HILL: A REVIEW

Abstracts Ethnopharmacological relevance Sonchus asper (L.) Hill (SA) is also known prickly sow thistle broadly distributed all through world, traditionally used for treatment of numerous diseases. 4 –5 g powder of SA (Sonchus asper) was used for the ailments of jaundice, reproductive disorder and cancer. Aim of the review In the present review it was arranged to prepare a detailed data on traditional uses, botany, pharmacological uses and phytochemistry of S. asper. Materials and methods An extensive search on electronic databases including, articles, PubMed, local herbal encyclopedias, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, Web of Science, conference papers, Scopus, published literature on SA between 1977 and 2018 on pharmacology and phytochemistry of SA and books in English, Arabic, French, urdu etc Results SA has been used as an emollient, a remedy for asthma, bronchitis, cough, inflammation, gastrointestinal infection, heart diseases, scabies, diabetes, constipation, and fever. 4 –5 g powder was used traditionally in the treatment of human jaundice, reproductive disorder and cancer. The extract of SA was applied to boils and wounds. The stems of the plant are given as a sedative, tonic and employed as an emollient and its roots act as a vermifuge. pharmacological activities revealed that SA has been used as an antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antinociceptive, antihypertensive, anticancer, antiaging, anti-infertility, hepatoprotective and antimicrobial activity. Phytochemistry profile of SA has showed the presence of some important phytochemicals sesquiterpene lactones glycosides, alkaloids, saponins, total phenols, flavanols and flavonoids. Conclusion Current pharmacological studies have proven many traditional uses of S. asper, comprising like antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antinociceptive, antihypertensive, anticancer, antiaging, anti-infertility, hepatoprotective and antimicrobial activity. Future research can be directed to extensive investigation about clinical trials and pharmacokinetics getting safety data to add new dimensions to therapeutic utilization of S. asper.
