FATTY ACIDS AND ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITIES OF SOME CENTAUREA SPECIES FROM TURKEY
Tugce Fafal
Abstract
Fatty acid compositions and cell antioxidant acitivities of three Centaurea species, C. iberica, C. urvillei ssp. hayekiana, and C. urvillei ssp. nimrodis were assessed. In these Centaurea species, as the fundamental fatty acid, in C. urvillei ssp. hayekiana oleic acid, linoleic acid were found in C. urvillei ssp. nimrodis and C. iberica. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were determined at 58.66%, 46.98%, 62.22% in C. iberica, C. urvillei ssp. hayekiana, and C. urvillei ssp. nimrodis, separately. Antioxidant activities of methanolic extracts of three Centaurea species were assessed by DPPH, ABTS and CUPRAC measures. The methanolic extract of C. urvillei ssp. hayekiana demonstrated the higher antioxidant activity than the other two species.
