PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATIONS OF CRUDE POWDER AND EXTRACTS OF FAGONIA INDICA BURM.F. VAR. INDICA

Atiq ur Rehman
Abstract

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of plants is done using various techniques. The focus of this study was to standardize the aerial parts of var. indica of the plant Fagonia indica Burm.f. This study aimed for the phytochemical screening and the investigation of different functional groups present in the plant as signature peaks. In this study phytochemical and FTIR spectroscopic analysis was carried out using the standard methods. HPLC analysis of methanol extract was done and various compounds present in the extract were estimated by RP-HPLC using the mobile phase (methanol and water). Phytochemical analysis showed various phytochemicals present in the plant. FTIR spectral analysis displayed diagnostic peaks of various functional groups, i.e., C-H, O-H, C-O, N-H, C-O-C, C=C and CH3. Spectra of the plant had no peaks in between wavenumbers (2220-2260 cm-1) indicating an absence of nitrogen containing groups and any toxic substance. HPLC analysis showed the presence of various compounds with specific retention times. Phytochemical, FTIR and HPLC studies are useful for the quality control of selected medicinal important plant used for pharmacological purposes. Key words: Fagonia indica, FTIR spectrum, Functional groups, Phytochemicals, HPLC
