Abstract

Momordica charantia L. is a monoecious plant and is a member of cucurbitaceae family. In addition to its antidiabetic potential, M. charantia L. is known as an effective remedy for several ailments including eczema, malaria, gout, jaundice, abdominal pain, leprosy, leucorrhea, piles, pneumonia, psoriasis, rheumatism, fever and scabies etc. Here, we report the chloroplast genome sequence of M. charantia L. grown in Pakistan. Using next generation DNA sequencing technology, we sequenced and assembled 162,471 bp of chloroplast genome of M. charantia L. which includes a pair of invert repeat (IR) regions of 29,671 bp each, a large single copy region (LSC) of 76,932 bp and a small single copy region (SSC) of 26,197 bp. With 36.7% GC content, M. charantia L. chloroplast genome contains 147 genes including 31 tRNA genes, 4 rRNA genes, 27 duplicated genes and 85 protein coding genes. The M. charantia L. chloroplast genome sequence has been deposited in Genbank under the GenBank accession number MG019415.
