FIELD ASSESSMENT OF POTATO CROP FOR DISTRIBUTION AND INCIDENCE OF FOLIAR DISEASES IN PUNJAB, PAKISTAN

Muhammad Nawaz
Abstract

In Pakistan potato (Solanum tuberosum) production has become an important industry both for farmers and consumers. Potato cultivation in Pakistan is always taken on priority among the other vegetables due to its high yield, having high nutrient values and mostly increasing the income of the farmers. First time we documented the incidence of foliar diseases from the hub of potato growing areas. We selected 15 potato fields from district Okara, Pakpatan, Sahiwal and collected data for foliar disease incidence after 30, 60 and 90 days intervals. In district Okara the incidence of late blight was 10%-30%, black leg incidence was 1-5% and early blight incidence was 1-3%. In district Pakpatan 9-28% late blight incidence was found and incidence of black leg was 3-5% while no incidence of early blight found. In district Sahiwal the incidence of late blight, black leg and early blight was minimum which was 4-7%, 6% and 4-6% respectively. After 90 days the incidence of late blight and black was maximum and after 30 days early blight incidence was maximum in selected district. Phytophthora infestanswas identified under microscope which causes the late blight, Alternaria solanicauses responsible for early blight, was identified under microscope similarly Erwinia carotova was also identified under microscope which causes the black leg. This study concluded that late blight is serious threat to potato industries and it can be minimize by good agricultural practices.
