IN VITRO MUTAGENESIS VIA EMS AND GAMMA IRRADIATIONS FOR CROP IMPROVEMENT - A REVIEW
Sabreena Rafi
Abstract
Induced mutagenesis via physical or chemical mutagens is an ideal approach to broaden genetic variation for application in functional genomics and has played a pivotal role in plant breeding. Mutagenic agents have been used to induce useful phenotypic variations in plants for more than seventy decades and have contributed to the development of thousands of cultivars worldwide. The present review is a summarized form of the work carried out till date on in vitro mutagen studies using EMS and gamma irradiations. The review would be beneficial in carrying forward further research towards in vitro mutagenesis in terms of enhancing the morphological characters, biochemical attributes and important secondary metabolites from the plants using various mutagens.
