SALICYLIC ACID IMPROVED YIELD AND POST HARVEST QUALITY OF AUTUMN POTATO CROP UNDER COOL TEMPERATURE

Abstract


Appropriate and proper sowing time is one of the basic requirements for maximum yield and high profit returns of potato in Pakistan. Abiotic stresses like cold, drought, salinity and heat are interlinked and badly affect growth and ultimately yield of potato. Management of sowing date and foliar application of growth regulators can help to avoid severe environmental stresses during these sensitive stages and may improve growth, yield and quality of potato. A two-year study was conducted on growth, yield and quality of potato as affected by salicylic acid (SA) i.e. 0, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 m ML-1 sown at different dates (October 01, 15 and 29). A randomized complete block (RCB) design was used with split plot arrangement. It is evident from the results that sowing dates, SA treatments and their interaction significantly affected growth, yield and quality parameters of potato crop. The average of two years results showed that maximum plant height, number of large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), survival %, dry matter content, specific gravity and starch content was observed in early sown plants (1st October) as compared to late sown plants (29th October). As for as salicylic acid is concerned, maximum number of large size tubers plant-1, total tuber yield (t ha-1), survival %, specific gravity, dry matter content and starch content were recorded in plants with the application of SA @ 1.5 mML-1 as compared to other treatments, whereas maximum plant height (49.0 cm) was noticed at 1.0 mML-1 SA. Based on the above results, it is concluded that early sowing in the first week of October with the application of SA up to 1.5 m ML-1 resulted in maximum yield and quality of autumn potato
