Genome-Wide Association Analyses of Drought-Resistance Related Traits and SNP Markers in Wheat Varieties during Different Growth Stages in Northern China

Abstract

Drought conditions are a key factor which restricts the output of wheat. Therefore, in order to improve wheat production under drought conditions, it is of vital significance to filter the drought-resistance related traits of wheat varieties, and excavate the sites related to drought resistance traits, for the purpose of facilitating effective variety breeding programs. In this study, 119 wheat varieties (lines) were selected as the study materials. Drought stress testing experiments were carried out during the germination and seedling stages under artificial culture conditions, and also during the middle and late growth stages under field conditions. Then, 31 traits which were determined to be related to drought resistance at the different growth stages were investigated. The 90K chip wheat variety was adopted for the analysis, and 26,026 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers were obtained. Also, genome-wide association analyses were carried out regarding the drought-resistance related traits during the different growth periods of the wheat. It was found that 62 SNPs were significantly associated with the aforementioned traits (P < 0.0001). These were distributed on the chromosomes 1B, 2A, 2D, 3B, 4A, 4B, 4D, 5A, 6A, 6B, 7A and 7B, respectively. Also these sites can be used to explore the related genes, and apply to provide a theoretical basis for the genetic improvements of the drought resistance performances of the wheat varieties.
