Biosorption of Humic acid from aqueous solution by activated charcoal prepared from pine sawdust: isotherm and thermodynamic studies

SOBHY MOSTAFA IBRAHIM YAKOUT
Abstract

Reduction of waste is an important concept for ecological recovery of different contaminants. This work, activated charcoal preparation from pine tree sawdust utilizing chemical phosphoric acid activation (PSDP) and their application for eliminate from the aqueous medium. The effect of sorbent mass, initial concentration and temperature of humic acid on the adsorption was investigated by batch experiments. The equilibrium sorption data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities of PSDP obtained from Langmuir were 170.9, 182.1 and 209.6 mg/g at 25oC, 45oC and 65oC, respectively. The thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption process of humic acid onto PSDP was spontaneous, favorable and endothermic. Activated charcoal from pine tree sawdust proves to have high capacity adsorptive to natural organic compound (humic acid).
