Range of nitrogen fertilizer application on French fry potato ‘Kennebec’ for different grades products

Lili Jiang
Abstract

Fertilizer nitrogen (N) management plays a critical role in achieving both economic and environmental objectives in potato (Solanum tuberosum) production. An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of N fertilization rates (0, 75, 150, 225, 300 and 375 kg N ha−1) on tuber yield and quality, as well as applied N range for different grades products of French fry in the potato cultivar Kennebec for two consecutive years (2015 and 2016). The results indicated that there were significantly statistical differences (P<0.05) between the levels of N on tuber yield, dry matter content, reducing sugar content, sucrose content and fry color index. Results also indicated that the range of N application determined the grades of French fries. Nitrogen applying range was of 120 to 183 kg ha−1 by integrating all the quality traits for high quality chips, 55 to 250 kg ha−1 for first class products and 0 to 280 kg ha−1 for qualified products. The highest theoretic yield was calculated to peak at 45.23 Mg ha−1with 183 kg ha-1 N rate for high quality products, 47.59 Mg ha−1 with 250 kg ha-1 N rate for first class products and 47.78 Mg ha−1 with 275 kg ha-1 .
