IDENTIFICATION AND VALIDATION OF ADULT PLANT YELLOW RUST (PUCCINIA STRIIFORMIS F.SP. TRITICI) RESISTANCE IN WHEAT

SYED JAWAD AHMAD SHAH
Abstract

Yellow rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f.sp. tritici Erikss (Pst), is one of the most important diseases of wheat in Pakistan and can be durably managed using adult plant resistance. The aim of this study was to find and validate new sources of adult plant resistance to yellow rust over years and locations. Fifty genotypes were selected out of 228 for preliminary study during 2005-07 at Nuclear Institute for Food and Agriculture, Peshawar, Pakistan. Validation study for adult plant yellow rust resistance of 29 seedling susceptible genotypes along with control was conducted during 2010-2013 at six locations of the southern, central and northern zones of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Significant (P<0.05) differences among genotypes, locations and years x locations for average coefficient of rust infection were found but of minor importance. Similarly, years, locations x genotypes, years x genotypes, years x locations and years x locations x genotypes remained non-significant. Adult plant resistance expression of test genotypes deviated at certain locations and years. Over years-locations, genotypes with coefficient of rust infection values of 0-20 and 21-40 were inferred to carry high and moderate levels of adult plant resistance, respectively. Sixteen genotypes including 93T347, Bakhtwar-93, Wafaq-2001, 91BT010-84, Parwaz-94, 7_03, 99B2278, Pak-81, CT00231, Kaghan-93, Kohsar-93, Zardana-89, V00183, Nowshera-96, Sariab-92 and 99B4012 had up to 20 coefficient of infection and were consistent with the preliminary study and carry high yield potential. These 16 genotypes will significantly contribute to yellow rust management and wheat improvement programs in Pakistan.
