Diallel crosses among six tomato genotypes grown in an arid region and estimation of combining ability and heritability

Abdullah A. Alsadon
Abstract

Four commercial tomato cultivars [Money Maker(P1), Pakmore VF (P2), Strain-B (P3), and Tanshet Star (P4)], two breeding lines [TL01899 (P5) and L05960 (P6)] and their15 F1 hybrids, using a half diallel cross system dur ing three summer seasons (2013 to2015), were used to calculate general and specific combining ability (GCA and SCA) and percentages broad (H2bs %) and narrow (h2ns %) sense heritability for important characters of tomato. For all the studied characters, the best combiner parent, with the highest GCA positive values, was the parental genotype Strain-B (P3), followed by the parental genotype Tanshet Star (P4). In general, the estimates of broad sense heritability for the various studied characters were found to be high and ranged from 90.1 6% for ascorbic acid content up to 99.90% for fruit fresh weight. Generally, the results indicated that crosses between tomato genotypes produce F1 hybrids that may have better performance than either of their parents. The results indicated that tomato crosses can produce F1 hybrids that may perform better in one or more respects than either of their parents. However, parents with good GCA do not necessarily produce superior crosses with good SCA in all combinations.
