ASSESSMENT OF STABILITY, ADAPTABILITY AND GRAIN YIELD IMPROVEMENT OF NEW CHICKPEA GENOTYPES USING AMMI AND OTHER STATISTICS

Abstract

To meet the domestic and global chickpea demands, sustainability in production is the only solution which can be achieved through the identification and development of stable genotypes. In order to determine consistently better performing and broadly adapted chickpea genotypes, multi-locational field experiments were conducted in irrigated and rainfed environments of Punjab, Pakistan. The plant material comprised 10 genotypes across all the 16 environments over the two years. Layout of all the trials was RCBD replicated thrice. Combined analysis of variance revealed that environments, genotypes, their interactions and first four interactive principle component axis i.e. IPCA 1 to 4 were statistically highly significant (P<0.01). About seven times (7.32%) greater SS was observed for G×E interaction in comparison to genotypic SS. This indicated the presence of dissimilar genotypic behavior over the environments. The extent of sum of squares due to environments suggested that these were dissimilar (E1, E4, E5 & E8) with greater differences in environmental mean yield causing differences in ultimate productivity of genotypes. Biplots generated from AMMI analysis discriminated genotypes 06003, 06040, and Punjab-08 with wider adaptability therefore can be recommended for general cultivation. These genotypes exhibited more productivity improvement in irrigated environments in contrast to rainfed conditions. Top performing genotype 06052 revealed specific adaptability and can be introduced as such to Kallurkot and Sialkot regions. Ranking results of genotypes and environments presented repeatable association among the stability statistics. This study confirmed the effectiveness of AMMI model alongwith other statistical parameters in analyzing the performance of genotypes through GE interaction.
