COMPARATIVE PERFORMANCE OF PAKISTANI WHEAT GENOTYPES FOR YIELD AND YIELD RELATED TRAITS

MUHAMMAD SAJJAD IQBAL
Abstract

The purpose of the study was to check the comparison among forty nine local wheat genotypes for yield and yield related traits. The studied material was cultivated in randomized complete block design RCBD with three replications under field conditions of Hazara University Mansehra during the crop season 2011-2012. Morphological traits consisted of both qualitative and quantitative characters. Statistical analysis was performed and means were separated for using the least significant test. Analysis of variance was carried out as well that showed that all the characters were significant (flag leaf area, plant height, number of tillers, peduncle length, spike length, awn length, number of spikelets per spike, number of nodes per plant, number of grains per spike, stem diameter, days to maturity, grain filling duration, 1000 grain weight, yield per plant, test weight, and kernel length) except harvest index and days to 50 percent headings among twenty one quantitative traits while among eight qualitative characters viz., kernel colour, straw colour, glume hairiness, spike density, lodging resistance and pest resistance were significant whereas glume colour and awn colour were nonsignificant. Highest yield was produced by Potohar 70 while ANZA+2NS was found to be best for yield related traits. The phenotypic diversity found in these genotypes can be used for the improvement of Pakistani wheat genotypes.
