Abstract

The response of germinated seeds of summer squash cv. Eskandrani in half-strength MS (Murashige and Skoog) basal medium supplemented with different concentration of 24-epibrassinolise (EBL) and sodium chloride (NaCl) was evaluated. The different concentrations (5, 10 and 20 μM) of EBL caused an increase in germination, and most of the aspects of shoot and root growth at seedling stage. EBL treatments improved the above mentioned attributes but maximum improvement was observed in response to EBL concentration of 10 μM with respect to the control. EBL (10 μM) significantly enhanced the fresh and dry weight, length of shoot and root, chlorophyll contents (Chl), leaf relative water content proline content, reduced sugars contents and the uptake of K and Ca as compared to control. Although, plants subjected to sodium chloride (50,100 and 150 mM) exhibited a reduction in all these mentioned attributes but proline contents electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation and Na uptake were enhanced in response to NaCl stress. However, the interaction between EBL and NaCl reduced the deleterious effects induced by salinity.
