Biofortification approaches for the enrichment of Durum wheat with Selenium

Hadiqa Tehreem
Abstract

Selenium is an indispensable micronutrient required in trace amount for the proper functioning of humans and animals because it plays an elementary role in their health, but it is deficient in billions of the people worldwide and its supply also varies globally. As it is declining in food chain so, there is a need for the instigation of various strategies to enhance its intake in population. Durum wheat is an important dietry source to alleviate this shortfall, beacuse it occupies the larger portion of mans diet. Different food system approaches represent the increase in Se content of Durum wheat and its intake, which will ultimately result in the augmentation of public health and will be cost effective. Wheat has the potential to assist in reducing any micronutrient defficiency by the integration of agronomic practice and breeding appraoch. Agronomic biofortification through fertilizers or foliar spray resluts in the increase of grain Se content. Second approach to increase Se in staple crop is utilization of the abilities of wheat to accumulate Se in edible tissues and then result in transformed progeny with high yield and increased Se content. This review summarizes the advancements made in agronomic and genetic biofortification for the enrichment of Durum wheat with Selenium.
