Abstract

Sarcobarus vermiculatus (Hook) Torey (Chenopodiaceae: common name (ireasewood) is a leaf suculent, sodium aceu ulating shrub usually lound in saline subsirates of Gireat Basın desert, Utah. USA. Laboratory expertfients were conducted to determine the eflect of salinity and temperature on the socd germination under various temperature (5-15°C, 10-20°C. 15-25°C, 20-30°C and 25-35°C) and salinity (0. 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 ml NaCI) treatments and also determine the role of growth regulators (GAs, kinetin, thiourea and nıtrate) under salinity siress, Sarcoba/s vermiculals showed a 100% germination in non-saline controls, at ail thermoperiods. Cermination decreased with increase in salinity and few sceds germinated at 1000 mM NaCI. Rate of germination decreased with an increase in salinity and variation in temperature had little effect. Exposure to high salinity caused the loss of viabilily in the seeds oniy few seeds germinated at higher temperatures when transfered to distilled water. At low salınity recovery was similar at all temperatures, but at higher salinity concentrations, it was higher at higher temperatures. Salinity-enforced germination inhibition was partially alleviated by all growth regulators at higher temperature regime (25-35 *C) and best reversal was obtained with the application of that of percent germination. Salinity appeared to inhibit seed germination partially due to hormonal imbalance and nitrogen deficiency and this inhibition cold be partially alleviated through application of germination regulating chemicals.
