Preclinical evaluation of acute, sub-chronic, reproductive and developmental toxicities of Ipomoea hederacea

Mueen Ahmad Chaudhry

Abstract

Present study was conducted to evaluate toxicological profile of Ipomoea hederacea commonly known as “ivy leaf morning-glory” Butanol fraction of I. hederacea (Ih.Bn) was subjected to evaluate acute, sub-chronic, reproductive and developmental toxicity of I. hederacea by following OECD guidelines. Rats showed tremors after oral administration of Ih.Bn 50 and 300 mg/kg doses, however the intensity was dose dependent and decreased with time. Rats showed normal behavior and reflexes at 3rd day post dose administration. Ih.Bn showed no remarkable toxic effects on reproductive capability and offspring development in rats. In sub-chronic toxicity evaluation, no significant changes in histopathological analysis, serum metabolic and physical parameters were noted. However, liver function biomarkers like AST and ALP were significantly raised which are of serious concerns that should be addressed. Further studies are required to clarify the statement about the safety of Ih.Bn and to explore the reason(s) behind the effects.
