Abstract

Herbalism, phytotherapy, or herbal medicine has a long history, as evidenced by traditional systems of medicines (Ayurveda, TCM, and medicine system of Native America). Plants are blessed with a great variety of bio-active phytochemical compounds with a range of advantageous biological effects to treat complex diseases. The focus of current study is to characterize the bioactive profile of Swertia chirataleaves, and their therapeutic potential against many ailments. Aqueous extract of S. chirata leaves was analysed by using a combination of techniques, GC–MS (Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry) to find its phytoconstituents. GC-MS analysis found that extract has 39 compounds belonging to different chemical classes. Among 39 metabolites, top 3 most abundant compounds, on the basis of their peak area percentages, were present at peak no 28, 6, and 29 respectively. They belonged to alkylsilane, cyclic ketones, acetals, cyclic sulfide, Furans, aryl-aldehyde, halogenated conjugated diene, cyclic ether, Indans, Carbonyl Compounds, Ketones, and Aromatics. Phytochemical compounds of extract showed anti- diabetic, antimicrobial, anti-corrosion, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-nauseaand vomiting, anti-asthmatic, and anti-Alzheimer potential. Aqueous extract of S. chirata leaves has potential to treat many diseases, so can be considered as a safe replacement to conventional medicines with less side effects. Keywords: Swertia chirata, GC-MS, Phytochemicals, Herbal medicine, Therapeutic potential
