Abstract
Herein, we report the isolation of lincomycin from rhizomes of Curcuma zedoaria. This is the first ever report of the isolation of lincomycin from any plant species. The compound was identified as its synthetic analogue, clindamycin (1). The presence of compound 1 in the crude extract was revealed initially through Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometric analysis. It was subsequently isolated and purified through column chromatography, yielding colorless crystals. Gas chromatography-Mass spectrometry of the purified compound also confirmed its identity. Single crystal X-ray crystallography of the compound gave conclusive results. It is assumed that clindamycin might have been formed by the substitution of the hydroxyl group in lincomycin by -chloride, through acid treatment, employed during extraction.
