Abstract

Melatonin is an important plant growth regulator which contributes to physical processes. This study examines how two sunflower cultivars, FH-701 (V1) and FH-741 (V2), can be alleviate from nickel stress by exogenous melatonin spray. The Research was conducted at Botanical Garden PARS, UAF. The experimental design was two factor factorial experiment under completely randomized design with three replications. The morphological and physiological parameters were be studied. Biochemical and morpho-physiological traits were adversely affected by nickel stress. It was concluded that by MEL (25µM) application, oxidative stress indicator reduced hydrogen peroxide and Malondialdehyde. However, during Nickel stress, foliar MEL (25µM) increased the activities of peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase. In addition, nickel stress caused K⁺ and Ca⁺² to decrease and Na⁺ to rise. However, in plants under nickel stress, melatonin treatment increased K⁺ and Ca⁺². MEL treatment also enhanced the activity of secondary metabolites such as anthocyanins (ANTs), proline content, total soluble protein (TSP) under nickel stress. According to this study, sunflower cultivar FH-741 had better growth as compared to FH-701 because it is more stress tolerant. MEL can lessen Ni-induced oxidative damage in sunflower plants by altering secondary metabolites and antioxidant defense while maintaining ion homeostasis.
