Parthenium hysterophorus: A Noxious Invasive Weed in Pakistan

Mukhtar Ahmed

Abstract

Parthenium hysterophorus L. is an invasive notorious weed responsible for huge losses to biodiversity, agriculture, livestock and even human health. The global occurrence of this plant is attributed to its reproductive potential, fast growth, adaptability to various climatic conditions and allelopathic ability. The weed is infamous due to allergic reactions of respiratory system, dermatitis, itching of mouth, nose and eyes in human. Together with tainting of milk and meat in animals. Allelopathic effect of this plant led to reduction in crop production and biodiversity. Different methods have been used to control (e.g physical, chemical, allelopathic, biological) spread of this noxious weed but no single strategy is proved so successful in this regard. Integrated management approach with biological control as main component can be a cost effective and eco-friendly solution. Cleaning of agricultural equipment with high air pressure before leaving the farm can reduce the spread of P.hysterophorus. Exploring the utilization potential of P.hysterophorus in different fields can also be a fruitful approach for control of this violent weed.
