Nagwa R.A. Hussein
Abstract
Euphorbia nutans Lag. is an alien species in the flora of Egypt. This study introduces a comprehensive taxonomic treatment of a freshly collected specimen of Euphorbia nutans from Egypt. Different microscopy techniques (LM, SEM, and SM) aid the examination of its general morphology, micro-morphology, internal structure, and palynological traits. E. nutans is characterized by solitary or monochasial cyathia, red-spotted lamina, and triangular-shaped and connate stipules. Seeds of this species are tetragonal and certainly uncaruncled, with a basal rhombic-shaped areole. It has tricolporate, small to medium grains that are prolate (P/E 1.59). The colpi are fusiform-shaped and terminal, extending 0.88 times the polar axis length. Ora is lolongate and elliptic in shape. Laticifers were observed in the internal structure of the stem and leaf. Thus, this study enhances the taxonomic framework for E. nutans by providing a comprehensive examination of its morphological and anatomical characteristics. These characteristics function as essential diagnostic attributes for E. nutans. They enable more precise identification and classification of this taxon, as well as concise differentiation between it and other related taxa.
