WHEAT BREEDING OPTIMIZATION: APPLICATION OF MGIDI AND FAI-BLUP FOR MULTI-TRAIT SELECTION
MUHAMMAD FAHEEM
Abstract
Multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) and factor analysis and ideotype-design (FAI-BLUP index) are the latest selection tools to estimate maximum genetic gain in wheat breeding. In present study, a set of 35 contesting wheat lines were subjected to MGIDI and FAI-BLUP to select superior genotypes and to compare the selection output of these indices. Four principal components explaining 73.3% of total variation retained for ideotype construction and genotype ranking. After varimax rotation, the 11 traits were grouped into four factors with commonality ranged from 0.45 to 0.97. The results showed that the cumulative percentage genetic gain of positive sense traits was 13.46 for FAI-BLUP and 12.51 for MGIDI whereas for negative sense traits its value was 0.60 and 0.38, respectively. Overall, for 11 traits MGIDI and FAI-BLUP showed increased genetic gain in 08 and 09 traits, respectively whereas both indices found decrease genetic gain for G/S and PH. MGIDI selected 5 top ranked genotypes viz. DF-1923, DF-1990, DF-19185, DF-19149, and DF-19130 based on balance trait profile and performance while FAI-BLUP index also selected these five genotypes except DF-19130 with different ranking. These results suggest that both indices can efficiently select best profile wheat genotypes closer to proposed ideotype.
