Abstract
The current research was initiated with the aimed to evaluate the best combining abilities of parents and their F1 progeny in general and specific combinations for yield traits. The selected 3 lines and 3 testers were used to develop crosses using line × tester design during summer 2021. Results displayed a significant magnitude of variability amongst selected traits. Tester Ghuari and Kissan were observed as the best general combiners with GCA of 23.79 and 22.36 for grain yield. Ghuari was also observed as the best general combiner (GC) for most studied parameters. For grain yielg, F1 hybrids, SZP-13200 × Ghuari and NCEV-1530 × Kissan, depicted highly significant general combining (GC) values. Hybrids SZP-13200 × Kissan and Karamat-Bar × Ghuari were considered as good specific combiners with SCA of 16.68g and 12.31g for grain weight. These combinations were desirable with significant SCA for grain yield. For grain yield, average heterosis varied 5.30% to 12.82%. All the studied hybrids displayed positive heterosis value over the mid parent heterosis. The hybrids NCEV-1530 × Kissan and NCEV-1530 × Soan-3 displayed significant mid-parent heterosis over the best parent of 13.42% and NCEV-1530-11 × Soan-3 (12.82%). For grain yield per plant, hybrid, NCEV-1530-11× Kissan showed maximum useful heterosis of 38.71% and SZP-13200 × Ghuari of 36.00%. These screened fruitful hybrids could be exploited for producing high-yielding varieties for yield improvement in future maize breeding strategies.
