Green synthesis, characterization and antibacterial efficacy of Zinc oxide nanoparticles synthesized using Bougainvillea glabra leaves extract.

Abstract


The study evaluates the characterization, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties of Bougainvillea glabra zinc oxide nanoparticles. The Bougainvillea glabra Zinc oxide nanoparticles were measured through Zetasizer (Particle Size Analyzer), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The leaf extract of Bougainvillea glabra zinc oxide nanoparticles was screened for TFC using an aluminum chloride assay. The antioxidant potential was measured through the DPPH test. The antibacterial activities of the extract were evaluated against bacterial strains using agar well diffusion techniques.  Through Zetasizer the average Particle size (nm) is 218.6nm. SEM images showed that the higher concentration crystalline structure particles size between 20 μm. The FTIR spectrum of zinc oxide nanoparticles exhibited various characteristics of absorption bands according to several functional groups. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) array of the synthesis sample shows that the pattern exhibits distinct peaks at 33.3° and 60.0°. The synthesised sample has a crystalline size of around 83nm indicating a Nanocrystalline structure. The Bougainvillea glabra zinc oxide nanoparticles possess 62.436% antioxidant activity. Antibacterial activities showed zone of inhibition ranging from 15mm-20mm compared with standard Polymyxin B. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of Bougainvillea glabra zinc oxide nanoparticles against Staphylococcus aureus MRS-2 MIC isolates show maximum MIC value 4.203µg/mL while least MIC value was demonstrated by MRS-10 0.623µg/mL, against Escherichia coli MIC isolates show maximum MIC value 5.129µg/mL while least MIC value was demonstrated by MRS-9 0.285µg/mL. The findings suggest that the leaf extract of Bougainvillea glabra with zinc oxide nanoparticles exhibited antioxidant and antibacterial activities.
