Muhammad Abubakkar Azmat
Abstract
Elaeagnus angustifolia L., is commonly known as oleaster or Russian olive. It is an economically important plant due to its multipurpose uses and tendency to grow under a wide range of harsh environments and various edaphic and topographical conditions. Various parts of the E. angustifolia plant are utilized for multiple purposes, including food, nutraceuticals, fuel, timber, windbreaks, and erosion control. In addition, E. angustifolia has nitrogen-fixing, bio-monitoring and bio-absorbent properties making it an important component of land reclamation and fertility enhancement programs. In this review, we have discussed the chemical composition of different parts of this plant, focusing on nutritional and nutraceutical components such as sugars, proteins, minerals, vitamins, alkaloids, flavonoids, sterols, and polysaccharides. Recent data about E. angustifolia analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective, anti-microbial, and anti-cancer properties are also comprehensively debated. Also, wound healing effects are described as possible starting points for the development of innovative cosmeceuticals. The present review paper further advanced the knowledge and highlighted the unique insights about potential uses of E. angustifolia in addressing human health concerns and targeted development of nutraceuticals.
