LEAF ANATOMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SELECTED DURIO ZIBETHINUS L. (DURIAN) IN JELEBU, NEGERI SEMBILAN.
Kamaruddin Shamin-Shazwan
Abstract
The anatomical features are thought to be taxonomically significant in identifying Durio zibethinus (Malvaceae). Therefore, this study aims to identify the leaf anatomical structure of the Durio zibethinus accessions from Jelebu. The leaves of D. zibethinus were selected based on a previous study Shamin-Shazwan et al. (2022). The leaves samples were collected from selected Jelebu durian orchards in December 2021. Leaf samples were prepared using a sliding microtome and subsequently observed under a light microscope. Based on this study, 39 parameters of leaf anatomical characteristics were observed and recorded. Four distinct characteristics observed in this study are the petiole’s medullary vascular bundles, presence of druses, presence of crystals in parenchyma cortex and layers of outer parenchyma cells. In conclusion, leaf anatomical characteristics possessed valuable information that can be used as additional data in the taxonomic study of D. zibethinus Jelebu accessions.
