Abstract

Tomato Brown Fruit Rugose Virus (ToBRFV) is one of the most devastating Tomato viruses responsible for low tomato yield and other fruit malformation effects. The virus spreads very fast and additionally undergoes high mutation hence complicating the ways of management and early identification. Currently, there are conventional diagnostic tests for viruses which to a certain extent, are not sensitive and specific enough to overcome the challenge that ToBRFV poses. Various technologies like Droplet Digital PCR (DD PCR), Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), and Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) have come up in the recent past with better sensitivity and efficiency than the conventional methods in detecting the presence of the virus or even quantifying it. Further, effective management techniques such as the new resistant varieties, improved grafting method, and the new chemicals and biocontrol agents are more effective and potentially available for controlling the virus. The goal of this review is to highlight these three crucial developments, together with their applications to enhance identification and mitigation methods as a means of protecting tomato production.
