Abstract

Researchers working on breeding projects for many crops often use the analysis of genetic divergence as a parent selection tool to minimise the number of crosses. It is anticipated that progenies from heterogeneous parents will exhibit a wide range of genetic diversity and offer greater opportunity to isolate superior recombinants. In an effort to assess their genetic diversity, 77 bottle gourd genotypes that were gathered from various sources were planted in three blocks of an Augmented Randomised Block Design at the experimental field of Urban Technological Park, Habbak, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir during the kharif of 2022. Using Ward's method, the genotypes were divided into 7 clusters. With 16 genotypes, cluster-VII was the largest of the seven clusters. In contrast, the genotypes of Clusters-V, III, II, IV, VI, and I were 15, 14, 13, 10, 5 and 4 respectively. The distances between the clusters showed that there was the biggest difference between clusters I and VI (638.51), I and VII (614.84) and I and III (603.84). In terms of average cluster values and yield contributing performance, Clusters I, II, IV, and VI all did well. The genetic variation across the traits was primarily influenced by fruit yield/hectare (18.15%), followed by fruit yield/plant (15.20%) and number of fruits/plant (10.12%). Within the bottle gourd hybridization programme, inbreeds belonging to clusters-I, II, IV and VI will have a greater priority for crossing due to factors such as group distance, cluster means and inter-genotypic crossings within the clusters. The findings of this study will make it easier to employ genetic resources as efficiently as possible to produce enhanced bottle gourd cultivars and for breeders to directly adopt the superior genotypes that have been found.
